Valentines is just around the corner and it’s a great opportunity for you and your little one to snuggle up with a good book. I put together a Valentine goody basket for each of my kids and tuck in a good book along with some festive yummies and some heart themed treats. Then leading up to the holiday, I like to go with my kids to the book store and choose some V-day books. Here are the ones we chose for this year along with a brief summary so maybe you can get these titles in time for the holiday to read with your children…
Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse!
Author: Laura Numeroff & Illustrator: Felicia Bond
Mouse is making Valentine's Day cards for his friends. Each card represents what he loves about them. He loves Moose because he’s such a good artist. He loves Pig because she’s a good dancer. Just as he is getting ready to give out his valentines, there is a knock on the door ... all of his friends have brought him special valentines. Find out what this “special” valentines is when you see the beautiful illustration on the last page of this lovely read aloud book
Happy Valentine’s Day, Curious George!
Author: N.Di Angelo & Illustrator: Mary O’Keefe Young
George and his neighborhood friends celebrate Valentine's Day together. As always “the man with the yellow hat” is by George’s side every step of the way as George and his friends do some decorating, baking and card making for the V-day holiday. Some fold out flap surprises will surely make for some great interactive fun for you and your little one.
Love from the Crayons
Author: Drew Daywalt & Illustrator: Oliver Jeffers
The crayons are back! The creators of The Day the Crayons Quit bring you this very special gift book. It explores the bright and subtle colors of love. This charming book expresses shades of colors in such sweet and kid-friendly ways such as Love is white because sometimes love is hard to see or Love is pink because love can be silly. This one was my favorite… the words are so moving that they continued to replay in my head long after they were read.
Love Monster
Author & Illustrator: Rachel Bright
Love Monster is a funny looking monster trying to fit in with the adorable, fluffy residents of Cutesville. But it’s hard to fit in when you’re a hairy, googly-eyed monster. So Love Monster sets out to find someone who will love him just the way he is. He looks everywhere and is ready to give up, but in the blink of a googly eye everything changes. It’s often said that love is found when you least expect it and the same is true for this funny looking monster.
Words and your Heart
Author & Illustrator: Kate Jane Neal
A perfect book to teach kids the power of words the impact their words can have on others. This book describes how some words can make one happy and other words can really hurt. A simple book to bring awareness to kids that words can go a long way… “They can make someone giggle, make someone grin or make them laugh out loud and roll around”. However, the best message of all is the one at the end… “Today somebody’s world can be a better place because of you!”
